Craniofacial Therapy

What is Craniofacial Therapy?

This is a gentle, hands-on technique that releases tension in the fascia (connective tissue) around the mouth, head, and body. This noninvasive treatment may provide relief from pain, like headaches and neck pain, side effects of cancer treatment, and more.

How Does Craniofacial Therapy Work?

Using a gloved hand, the therapist applies gentle pressure inside the mouth, under the tongue, and on the palatal bones to release any tightness or misalignment. Improving the tongue's flexibility and mobility helps shape the upper palate.

Ideally, the tongue should rest on the upper palate, with the tip just behind the teeth. This position helps align the palatal bones and the upper teeth. By allowing the tongue to rest properly and widen the upper palate, we enable the mouth to shape itself as intended.

Benefits of Craniofacial Therapy

Orthodontics and craniofacial therapy can also work in tandem to achieve better, easier outcomes with braces, resulting in shorter treatment times and less discomfort for the patient.

For adults, this therapy is beneficial to alleviate TMJ dysfunction, headaches, and oral-facial muscle pain. For infants/children, this therapy is used for issues related to birth trauma, nursing difficulties, and airway obstructions.

About Craniofacial Therapy

The heart of craniofacial therapy is the premise that the body wants to heal itself and be in balance, but often just needs support in doing so. When we address misaligned parts of the skeletal system or help unwind the tension in muscles and tissues, we can allow the body to create that needed space in the mouth on its own and give teeth the room they need to sit as intended.

How Craniofacial Therapy Helps

The goal of craniofacial therapy is to improve, or "unwind," the cranial rhythm and release tight fascia that can lead to chronic dental and body-wide health issues.
